Ever since I was a young boy the concept of being right or left handed was in a way fascinating to me. My mother and one brother were left handed. My other siblings and I were right handed as was my father. My mother at times would tell us, They say that right handed people predominantly use their left brain and left handed people predominantly use the right side of their brain, so it stands to reason that only left handed people are in their right mind.
The older I got the more I learned about how this apparently works. Both my father and mother had strokes from blockages in the blood flow to a certain part of their brains. My mother's was on the right side of her brain and it affected her left side of her body. Even today she can mostly use her right hand to place an object between her left hand and body to hold it. Her left hand is otherwise useless. Being left handed and unable to mainly use her left hand has given her a lot of frustration over the years.
Throughout the Scriptures to the right side is given a certain preeminence. We read that the risen Saviour is seated on the right hand of the Father. When Stephen was stoned to death he said he saw Jesus standing on the right hand of the Father.
In this life when someone is very helpful in many ways they are often referred to as “my right hand man”.
For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not, I will help thee.
Isaiah 41:13 GNV
Today as I read Isaiah 41:13 I was struck with the thought that the Lord says “I will HOLD thy right hand”. Though I have learned to do a few things with my left hand, here somewhat like my mother being unable to use her predominant left hand, for most people in the world holding my right hand makes me unable to do most of the things I would normally do with that hand, many activities of my life. And the Lord tells me He will hold my right hand. And then He says, Fear not, I will help thee. So He holds the hand with which I normally do most things with in my life, and then He says, Fear not, I will help you.
Jesus told His disciples, without me you can do nothing. He was applying the understanding that just like the branch of the grapevine cannot do anything if it is separated from the vine itself, in fact its very nourishment comes only from abiding in the vine, in a very similar way the Lod holds my right hand and says, Fear not, I will help thee.
Looking at it another way He will more easily keep me from doing things I shouldn't do. My one granddaughter loves to run ahead, do things on her own. When she is with me I make her take my hand when crossing through a parking lot. Being nuch taller and being more observant, aware of things around us I can see cars coming from farther away and I can hold her back. Her older brother wants to hold my other hand just to be with me, feel that connection, just be a part of me. I cherish those times together. Though I am helping them it is more important to me that I am being with them.
Holding my right hand and telling me that “I will help thee” isn't the only thing I get from Him holding my hand, and its not the only thing the Lord gets from holding my hand.
Hopefully this helps see the Lord and Him in your life in a greater way. As I was encouraged from another devotional reading today:
Praise ye the Lord with me, and let us magnify His Name together.
Psalms 34:3 GNV
“Magnification doesn’t make something bigger; it means making our view of what we are looking at bigger.”
(Cited from “Rest On Peace With God Daily”, Benton T. Thompson III)
I’ve been left handed all my life, so far. Thanks for sharing this.
