Various groups of Jewish leaders thought their many years and those of them who were gone before them had it all figured out, very detail of who and what the Messiah would be like, his purpose, and even what was required of them before he would come. Even when the Magi came and asked where the Christ, the annointed king was to be born they confidently gave the Scripture saying he would be born in Bethlehem. But apparently didn't think it was the right time because though the Magi were sent on their way none of the Jews, their leaders even bothered to go with them or after them. Many things that Jesus did during His ministry were not anything the years of learning or studying of the Jews counted as significant or of any importance. Jesus didn't fit what they thought the Messiah would be and do. Only a couple enquiring minds like Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea allowed their preconception to be challenged.
A Psalm committed to Asaph.
God standeth in the assembly of gods: he judgeth among gods.
How long wil ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked?
Selah.
Psalms 82:1 - 2 GNV
And here we get a sense of our own failure, our own "God, you've got this wrong" moment. This psalmist writes that God is standing in the assembly of gods, judging. And the very next thing that is said is, "God, you have this all wrong! You are not judging correctly." Some may say, No, no, no, no, no." As judge He's telling other gods what they are doing is wrong. Well, often enough the thought remains on the main subject before the "Selah" is placed making it the speaker's intent to be exactly as stated, "God, you're getting this all wrong", and is calling out God when He is standing among the assembly of gods.
Now wait a second. There's another issue to explore. Who are these other gods? Well, this isn't a one time mention like this. In those first days Satan suggested to Eve the spiritual blessings that would follow if she ate of that forbidden fruit.
Then the serpent said to the woman, Ye shall not die at all, But God doeth know, that when ye shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Genesis 3:4 - 5 GNV
You shall be as gods, and what was so special about these gods? They knew good and evil. Now many translations say "Be like God". That was why the mighty angel of light Lucifer was cast out of heaven. "I will be like the Most High God" (Isaiah 14:13, 14). But the wording here is 'be as gods:. It lends to future reference.
When Laban was gone to shear his sheep, Then Rachel stole her fathers idols.
Now though thou wentest thy way, because thou greatly longest after thy father's house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods?
Genesis 31:19, 30 GNV
In the days when Adam and Eve were created there were no idols. None were mentioned in Noah's day, at the tower of Babel. But here now Abraham's grandson is revealed to be the presence of idols and those idols are equated to being gods. While not actually coming up with a solution as to who exactly the "gods" are it become very important to see where Jesus would go with bringing up defining an understanding of gods, that mortal men may even be called gods. Without getting real deep it should suffice to say this should be reason enough of a challenge to recognize there is more that could be pondered about the world we normally cannot see, the world of these gods.
I have said, Ye are gods, and ye all are children of the most High. But ye shall die as a man, and the princes, shall fall like others.
Psalms 82:6 - 7 GNV
Jesus quotes this in John 10.
(Jesus said) I and my Father are one. Then the Jews again took up stones, to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father: for which of these works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For the good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy, and that thou being a man, makest thy self God. Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your Law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God was given, and the Scripture cannot be broken, Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest, because I said, I am the Son of God? If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, then though ye believe not me, yet believe the works, that ye may know and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.
John 10:30 - 38 GNV
So for now it is reasonable to draw at least these thoughts. From the morning worship I was able to be a part today this thought applies, our Lord's patience means salvation. We sometimes accuse God of the worst attricities only to learn how wrong we are and the salvation God is working not only in us, but in and for many around us. Then there is the reality of an unseen world around us, a whole seeming world or even universe that every sense of man cannot make sense of what is, let alone admit it even exists. But most important is the fact that among gods no matter how we might try yo define it God stands out and above anything, anyone who may be called God.
